A laughing matter

I’ve been thinking today about the way, as writers’, we describe laughter. There’s the chuckle, the cackle, the giggle or guffaw. Then we have the laugh, pure and simple, or descriptions of the act – ‘roll in the aisles’ or ‘split one’s sides’. But whatever emphasis, whichever words we choose, it can sometimes get a little old. So the challenge is keeping it fresh; it doesn’t really matter if the characters spend a lot of time ‘laughing’ as long as they do it in an interesting way.

I’m just sharing my thoughts really. I was playing around with noises in speech to indicate laughter because some people just plain laugh – a lot. The trick is in not annoying the reader 🙂

Any thoughts?
