Stumbling blocks

Just when I think I’m making real progress I hit a stumbling block. I’m struggling with an action scene because I can’t seem to get into the head of my character. I know it’s not right, because the responses don’t sit well on his shoulders but he’s being pretty tight lipped about how I can rectify it. I need another pair of eyes, but sometimes it’s difficult when you take something out of context, it just turns out to be extremely complicated explaining the back story!

Oh well, nobody said this writing game is easy! I’ll persevere until I get it right and hope my character starts talking to me again soon 🙂

Thanks for reading, until next time.

I know exactly how you feel, having been there a few times myself. I’ve learned to look at it as a learning situation: your character has something to “teach” you. You’ll need to pull yourself away from the work for a day or two and do something completely unrelated, the more fun, the better. That way, your conscious mind will disengage and the character can “interact” with your subconscious without you getting in the way. I’ve even had book endings come to me in dreams, after disengaging for a while. Give it a try. It works for me.

Thanks for the advice – it certainly worked. After leaving the scene alone for a few days, my mind was able to gently tick away until it came up with the answer. Now, having completed that particular section, I can virtually see my character giving me a nod of approval!
