YThe Yeti, or Abominable Snowman, is an interesting creature because, though most agree the Yeti is part of myth, cryptozoologists have been trying to prove the existence for years.

I remember an advertisement years ago for Stones Bitter. The barman was based on this legendary creature, which led to lines such as “Are you open, Yeti?” and “This barman’s abominable!” As far as advertising goes, it’s quite clever – it certainly stuck with me and I don’t even drink bitter!

In media, the Yeti has made several appearances. The list includes:

    The Yeti appears in a variety of films, including: The Snow Creature; Half Human; The Abominable Snowman; Monkeybone; Yeti: A Love Story; The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and Monsters, Inc.

  • In television depictions include: Hugo the Abominable Snowman (Looney Tunes); Robbie the Reindeer; Power Rangers Operation Overdrive; The Secret Saturdays: Ugly Americans, and Regular Show. A robotic Yeti appeared in The Abominable Snowmen (Doctor Who).
  • The Yeti features in numerous video games: Urban Yeti!; Spyro: Year of the Dragon; Carnivores: Ice Age, and Warcraft.
  • There are references in literature: The Abominable Snowman is a Marvel character; a Yeti is the main creature in Goosebumps (The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena) by R. L. Stine, and the creature features in The Red Guard, a Nick Carter novel.

    Isn’t there a Yeti in the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer movie? I’m Jewish, so I only know this from commercials. I think one of the Final Fantasy games on the Super NES had a Yeti as a hidden playable character too.

      I’ve not seen the movie, but if you spotted a Yeti in the advert then I’m sure there is. It doesn’t surprise me about Final Fantasy – every great creature should be represented 😀

        There are certainly better ways to win a fight! Money being used as a weapon is an interesting concept – it has a flavour of martial arts.

        Guess you’d have to aim for the eye or hope a monster chokes on a penny. No quarters should be used. That’s laundry money for college students.

        Ha! I’m sure I watched a movie recently where a man killed someone with a piece of paper, though I could be dreaming that 😉

        That sounds oddly familiar, but I could have dreamed that up too. Might be common since paper cuts hurt like mad.

    I like myths like this one: Ones with enough hint of truth and unresolved mystery that some still believe them to be true.

      I believe it! I’m a sucker for this kind of legend. The creature is probably nothing like modern depictions, but the stories are fun 🙂

    My favourite Yeti is in Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal – it made me cry. I also rather like the yetis in The Mummy, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor :).

      Oh gosh, I just posted about Lamb today (subtle self-promotion but totally relevant 😉 ) and I’d actually forgotten about the yeti. It made me cry too…

    There are some yeti in veeery old lost episodes of Doctor Who, but they’re unintentionally hilarious. Big fluffy hoppy things. 😀
